Decision Matrix for Changing Habits

  Choice 1 Choice 2
Benefits
Costs

1. Write in the choices you have regarding this decision, e.g. drinking - quitting; procrastinating - doing it now; smoking - not smoking.

2. Write in as many advantages and disadvantages as you can for each option, trying to be as specific as you can. You can come back to this form whenever you think of anything new to add - take your time.

3. For each item you have written down, consider whether it is something that will happen soon or later. For example, the pleasure of using alcohol is immediate, while the hangover is tomorrow. Underline short term consequences and circle long term results. See any patterns?

4. What conclusions can you draw? What decision is supported?
